Description

This tenugui features the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (Jūnishi), arranged like traditional seal impressions.

The zodiac system originated in ancient China and later spread throughout East Asia, including Japan, where it became closely connected with the calendar and the traditional way of counting the years. Each animal represents one year in a repeating twelve-year cycle and continues to be a familiar part of Japanese culture today.

Hand-dyed with care using traditional techniques, this playful yet timeless design is perfect for everyday use or as a thoughtful gift celebrating East Asian tradition.

Care instructions
  • Wash separately from other clothing by hand for the first few washes, as this is a hand-dyed product.
  • Avoid using bleach or detergent containing bleach.
  • After washing, allow it to dry completely.
  • When fraying occurs, trim the loose horizontal threads, leaving about 5mm of the vertical fringe. Repeat this process several times until the fraying stops.
