Description

Ichimatsu-moyou is a traditional Japanese checkered pattern made by alternating squares or rectangles in two colors. Simple and timeless, it has been used in Japanese design for centuries.
The pattern became especially popular during the Edo period, when the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu often wore hakama decorated with bold white and navy checks on stage. His distinctive style helped give the pattern its name: Ichimatsu.
Because the pattern continues without interruption, it is also associated with prosperity, continuity, and good fortune.
Carefully hand-dyed using traditional techniques, this tenugui brings a classic Japanese geometric design into everyday life, whether used as a cotton towel, gift wrap, or craft fabric.

Care instructions
  • Wash separately from other clothing by hand for the first few washes, as this is a hand-dyed product.

  • After washing, allow it to dry completely.
  • When fraying occurs, trim the loose horizontal threads, leaving about 5mm of the vertical fringe. Repeat this process several times until the fraying stops.
