The moon visible on the night of August 15th of the lunar calendar, known as the 'Mid-Autumn Moon,' will be on September 17th in 2024. Even today, it is celebrated as the 'Harvest Moon,' with the tradition of offering pampas grass and dumplings while admiring the moon. Because taro is harvested around this time, it is also called 'Imo Meigetsu' (Potato Harvest Moon).
In Japan, there is also a custom of viewing the moon on the night of September 13th of the lunar calendar, known as the 'Thirteenth Night.' The moon on the Thirteenth Night is slightly waning before becoming a full moon and is considered the second most beautiful moon after the full moon. Beans and chestnuts, which are harvested around this time, are offered to the moon. In 2024, the Thirteenth Night will be on October 15th.
