Description

This hand-dyed tenugui features elegant clematis flowers, known as Tessen in Japan. The Japanese name, literally meaning "iron wire," comes from the plant's slender yet strong climbing stems.

With its graceful flowers and delicate vines, clematis has long been appreciated in Japan as a seasonal motif. Its vines, which grow continuously while remaining slender and flexible, have also come to symbolize resilience and lasting connections. For this reason, tessen has traditionally been regarded as an auspicious motif in Japanese design.

This tenugui is dyed using a special technique that creates a subtle, fine outline around the motifs, adding depth and a distinctive softness to the design. Carefully hand-dyed by skilled artisans, it can be enjoyed as a lightweight cotton towel or displayed as seasonal wall art.

By simply inserting this rod into the top and bottom of a tenugui, you can easily create a tapestry.

Care instructions
  • Wash separately from other clothing by hand for the first few washes, as this is a hand-dyed product.

  • After washing, allow it to dry completely.
  • When fraying occurs, trim the loose horizontal threads, leaving about 5mm of the vertical fringe. Repeat this process several times until the fraying stops.
