Description
In English, 'Asanoha' is known as "hemp leaf." Its design origins are from a geometric pattern made of hexagons, later named for its resemblance to the hemp leaf. The history of the hemp leaf pattern is ancient, with its presence seen in the decorations of Buddhist statues during the Heian period (794-1185). Eventually, in the Edo period (1603-1868), this pattern became popular among women and was incorporated into children's kimonos and birth clothes (ubugi). In times when child mortality was high, newborns were dressed in hemp leaf pattern kimonos - red for girls and yellow or light blue (asagi) for boys. This practice was influenced by the belief in the hemp's strong vitality and straight growth, symbolizing protection against evil spirits. The use of the hemp leaf pattern in birth garments embodied the wishes for the children's healthy and robust growth, serving as a prayer for their wellbeing and safeguard against misfortune.

In the popular manga "Demon Slayer (鬼滅の刃)," traditional Japanese patterns are used in the characters' costumes. the outfit of Nezuko (禰豆子), the sister of the protagonist Tanjiro Kamado (竈門炭治郎), features this Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern.
