Description
May 5th was officially designated as Children’s Day in Japan in 1948.
Traditionally, March 3rd is celebrated as Hinamatsuri—the Doll Festival—for girls, while May 5th, known as Tango no Sekku, has long been a day to celebrate the growth and health of boys.
Even before the modern holiday was established, families would display kabuto (samurai helmets) and koinobori (carp streamers) to ward off evil and pray for a child’s strong future.
While times may change, the deep love and hopes parents hold for their children remain constant.
