Description

Rhinoceros beetles and stag beetles are beloved by Japanese children. Many people have memories of keeping them as pets or catching them in the mountains during their childhood.
The rhinoceros beetles found in Japan are a unique species known as the 'Japanese rhinoceros beetle.' They are named this way because the shape of their horns resembles those of a rhinoceros, with a small horn on top and a large horn below. The Japanese name 'kabutomushi' comes from 'kabuto,' meaning 'samurai helmet'.
Stag beetles are said to have around 1,500 species worldwide, primarily found in Asia. The Japanese name 'kuwagata' is derived from 'kuwa,' a farming tool, due to its resemblance to the beetle's mandibles (pincers).
